Widely regarded by critics as one of the best Basque-language films ever made, Flowers is a tender, sophisticated drama dealing with the complications of adult relationships.
Ane (Nagore Aranburu) is a lonely, childless woman stuck in a less than happy marriage to Ander (Egoitz Lasa). When she learns she has early onset menopause, the news is just one more finished chapter in her life. Then a bouquet of flowers arrives with no note — and another every week after that, inserting a shard of light into Ane’s otherwise dull existence working as a secretary in a construction company. Meanwhile, toll booth attendant Lourdes (Itziar Ituno) is married to construction worker Benat (Josean Bengoetxea), their relationship strained by his disapproving mother. When Benat perishes in a car accident, these characters’ lives will intersect.
Described as “beguiling and beautifully structured”, this is a unique meditation on romance and remembrance.
